January 23, 2012

Today, January 23, 2012, marks the 50th anniversary of my final day in Bad Kreuznach, Germany and my time in the U.S. Army with Battery A, 1st Missile Battalion, 333rd Artillery, 40th Artillery Group (Redstone) at Des Gouttes Kaserne, as detailed on Page 9 Overseas Duty under the section Orders for Home.

Our 1st Sergeant SFC Forrest Stacy, an outstanding NCO and person, drove me to the Bad Kreuznach Bahnhof at 1900 hours local time, where I boarded a troop train at 1930 hours for the overnight trip to Bremerhaven. Because of my 4 month extension on active duty in response to the Berlin wall being erected, I was the first person from our outfit to be heading home in over 6 months.

January 24, 2012 Today, January 24, 2012, marks the 50th anniversary of my final day in Germany and my departure for home aboard the troop ship USNS Upshur. As detailed on Page 9 Overseas Duty under the section Sailing Home, we boarded the ship at 1600 hours, and at 1700 hours to the tune of "Auf Wiedersehen" played by an Army band at dockside, we sailed away from Bremerhaven.

February 2, 2012 Today, February 2, 2012, marks the 50th anniversary date of my separation from active duty with the U.S. Army as detailed on Page 9 Overseas Duty under the section Sailing Home.

Added a photo provided by Reed Moon of Ron Smith and Reed Moon meeting after 51&1/2 years in Casper, Wyoming at the bottom of Page 10 Epilogue: Where Are They Now? The Men Who Proudly Served in 40th Artillery Group (Redstone).
