Armed Forces Day, May 1959
Fort Sill, Oklahoma
The crew has started the loading of Liquid Oxygen (LOX) into the thrust unit oxidizer tank.
The extreme low temperature of LOX, -297 degrees F. or lower, causes a condensation band to form around the outer skin of the missile. The tactical missile tank holds 25,000 lb. of LOX. The trainer missile has a much smaller shallow tank that wraps around the circumference of the thrust unit, but still provides the ability to train the fueling crew in the handling and loading of LOX.
